Punch in (zoom in) on your camera

Adding a Punch-In (Zoom-In) Effect on Your Camera in Tella

A popular way to add emphasis to what you’re saying in a video is to zoom in or “punch in” on your camera. This effect signals to the viewer that the content is important and deserves their attention. It’s really easy to add these zoom effects in Tella using layouts.

Steps to Add a Punch-In Effect

1. Prepare Your Video

  • Ensure you have a video clip that includes your camera footage.

  • Play back the video to identify the moment where you want to add the punch-in effect.

2. Locate the Moment to Zoom In

  • Use the playhead to navigate to the exact point where you want the zoom-in effect to start.

  • For precise timing, play the video and pause at the desired moment.

3. Add a Layout for Zoom-In

  • With the playhead at the starting point, click on Add Layout.

  • This will mark the beginning of the zoom-in effect.

4. Define the Endpoint

  • Move the playhead to where you want the zoom-in effect to end.

  • Click Add Layout again to mark the endpoint.

  • You should now have a highlighted section on the layouts timeline representing the duration of the zoom effect.

5. Select the Zoomed-In Layout

  • Scroll down to the Camera Only Layouts in the layouts panel.

  • Choose the layout that zooms in and scales up your camera footage.

  • For example, select a layout that scales the camera to 130%.

  • This layout will enlarge your camera view during the specified section.

6. Preview the Effect

  • Play back the video to see the zoom-in effect in action.

  • The camera will zoom in at the start of the layout and zoom back out at the end.

7. Adjust the Layout and Transitions

  • If needed, tweak the start and end points of the layout for better timing.

  • To change the transition effect:

  • Select the zoomed-in layout segment.

  • Click on Edit Layout.

  • Go to the Transition settings.

  • Choose between Smooth (for a gradual zoom) or Hard Cut (for an immediate zoom).

Tips

  • Fine-Tune Timing: Adjust the layout’s position on the timeline to align the zoom effect precisely with your speech.

  • Experiment with Layouts: Try different camera-only layouts to see which one best fits the style of your video.

  • Use Transitions Effectively: The transition type can change the feel of your zoom effect. A hard cut is more abrupt, while a smooth transition is more gradual.

Summary

To add the punch-in effect or zoom-in effect on your camera in Tella:

  1. Add a layout that starts where you want to zoom in and ends where you want to zoom out.

  2. Use the zoomed-in camera-only layout to create the effect.
