Multiple Layouts

How to use multi-layouts in Tella

Tella’s Multi-layouts feature allows you to create dynamic and engaging videos by incorporating multiple layouts within a single video clip. This guide will walk you through how to use Multi-layouts, adjust transitions between them, and decide when to use this feature versus recording multiple clips.

What are multi-layouts?

Multi-layouts is an extension of Tella's standard Layouts feature, which allows you to arrange content in different ways within your video. With Multi-layouts, you can now combine various layouts within one clip to switch between different viewing formats—such as screen recordings, camera shots, or side-by-side views—seamlessly throughout your video.

When should I use multi-layouts?

Multi-layouts are ideal when you want to make a single video clip more engaging by changing the way content is presented over time. It’s especially useful for presentations, product demos, or tutorials where different sections of the video might benefit from different layouts.

For instance:

  • Start with a camera-only layout to introduce yourself.

  • Transition into a screen and camera layout to showcase a product demo.

  • Highlight specific details with a screen-only layout.

How to add multi-layouts

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to add multiple layouts to a video clip in Tella:

1. Start with a Single Layout:

  • Open your video in the editor. If your video already has one layout applied (e.g., a side-by-side screen and camera layout), it will remain consistent throughout the clip.

2. Access the Layouts Panel:

  • On the right-hand side, click the Layouts panel to open the layout picker. Below the timeline, you’ll see the clip broken into segments rather than a single timeline, indicating where layout changes occur.

3. Add a New Layout:

  • To add a new layout, select the point in the video where you want the layout to change, then click Add Layout. This will divide the timeline into segments, each of which can have a different layout.

  • Select the layout you want for each segment. For example, you could switch from a camera-only layout to a screen-and-camera layout.

4. Adjust Transitions:

  • Between the two layout segments, Tella will automatically apply a smooth transition by default. You can adjust this by clicking the transition handle between segments and dragging it to fine-tune when the transition occurs.

  • To modify the transition type, click Edit Layout Transition. You can choose between:

    • Smooth Animation: A gradual, flowing transition between layouts.

    • Hard Cut: A quick switch without any animation.

When should I use multi-layouts vs. multiple clips?

There’s no one-size-fits-all rule for when to use Multi-layouts versus recording multiple clips. However, here’s a guideline that may help:

  • Use Multiple Clips: If your video is long or involves different sections that are easier to record separately, consider breaking the content into multiple clips. This simplifies the recording process and makes it easier to manage and edit.

  • Use Multi-Layouts: If you want to make a single clip more engaging by changing the presentation format as you go, Multi-layouts is the better option. It allows you to switch layouts within one continuous clip, making it more dynamic and visually appealing.

Conclusion

Tella’s Multi-layouts feature gives you flexibility to create polished, professional videos by switching between various content arrangements. Whether you want to showcase a demo, focus on specific screen details, or maintain an engaging flow, Multi-layouts offers the tools to make your video stand out.
